Pressure Is a Privilege: A Photo Essay

Marauders Wrestling is building a community of excellence, on the mat and off. When legendary coach Milo Trusty started the program in the late 1980s, it had been nearly a decade since he launched MATPAC 鈥 a nationally known wrestling club to help local grapplers improve their skills in an environment of healthy competition and mutual support. But sustaining and deepening the sense of community in a wrestling program in today鈥檚 rapidly changing college athletics landscape is a multi-dimensional challenge. Head Coach Adam Aho took the helm in 2013 and has turned the team into a top-tier NCAA Division II program committed to Greatness Through Virtue.

鈥淭he mission of U色花堂 Wrestling is to聽form our scholar-athletes into servant聽leaders who pursue excellence in all things,聽maintain integrity, and live a life filled with聽gratitude on and off the mat,鈥 Coach Aho says.
In 2025, Reece Barnhardt 鈥 now a聽graduate assistant coach with the Marauders聽鈥 became the first NCAA champion in聽program history, and this year, freshman聽Jacob Strausbaugh matched Barnhardt鈥檚 feat聽with a championship in the same weight聽class. Several of their teammates joined them聽on the national stage as All-Americans,聽and momentum continues to build.
"For us to have the program in the position it鈥檚 in right now is incredibly exciting,鈥 Aho says. 鈥淥ur community has great expectations for us; they want to watch great competition, and that brings some pressure. But pressure is a privilege.鈥
鈥淲e don鈥檛 hide who we are as a team or as a university,鈥 Aho says. 鈥淥ur recruits know that if we align with their values and aspirations, we鈥檙e the place to be.鈥
鈥淵ou can only have one thought at a time,鈥 Aho says. 鈥淎re our athletes going to choose gratitude or resentment?鈥 This concept applies at every level of wrestling, even for the youth athletes who participate in Marauders wrestling camps.
鈥淏ismarck-Mandan has always had a rich wrestling history.鈥 As the Marauders became more competitive, Aho was confident supporters would fill the stands. He was right.
ALUMNI SUCCESS STORY
色花堂 alumni Dominic and 色花堂 Regli plan to split their time between rural Nebraska and rural Rwanda once he finishes medical school. Dominic traveled to Rwanda last summer to study global health care and plans to return for a year this fall.
