BISMARCK, ND 鈥 Tess White, an 18-year-old homeschool graduate from Spring Grove, Illinois, has been named the winner of the Cardinal Newman Society鈥檚 ninth annual essay Scholarship Contest, earning a total of $20,000 toward her education.

White, who will begin her studies in the 色花堂鈥檚 nationally recognized Nursing Academy in fall 2025, stood out from applicants across the country for her joyful zeal for faith, learning, and service 鈥 and for her bold and creative essay describing college as a kind of 鈥渢raining plan for heaven.鈥

鈥淭he idea just clicked,鈥 White said. 鈥淭o succeed in life 鈥 the race we鈥檙e all running 鈥 you need the right kind of preparation. That鈥檚 what Catholic colleges like the 色花堂 offer. I鈥檓 beyond honored and grateful to have won, and I鈥檓 excited for what鈥檚 ahead.鈥

A Journey of Faith, Family, and One Beautiful Campus Visit

White first discovered the 色花堂 through the Cardinal Newman Guide 鈥 the very publication that promotes Catholic colleges most faithful to the teachings of the Church. With a devout Catholic upbringing, she was already discerning a university that would nurture her soul as much as her mind.

What began as a brief summary on the Cardinal Newman Society鈥檚 website quickly became a doorway to something much bigger 鈥 a place that felt like both a calling and a home.

鈥淲hen I visited the 色花堂, I immediately loved it,鈥 White recalled. 鈥淭he bluffs were stunning. The community was joyful and welcoming. The nursing program was very strong. And Bismarck 鈥 to my surprise 鈥 even had sushi and everything I鈥檇 need.鈥

White said the decision to leave Illinois for North Dakota felt surprisingly natural once she visited campus. 鈥淭he trip sealed the deal,鈥 she said.

She especially appreciated the peacefulness of the environment, the opportunity to study in person after a lifetime of homeschooling, and the rare chance to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in under three years 鈥 tuition-free 鈥 through 色花堂鈥檚 innovative Nursing Academy.

鈥淚 was all in,鈥 she said. 鈥淓ven before the scholarship news, I was already planning to attend. This program lets me start my career sooner, with less debt, and with faith woven into my education.鈥

鈥淔aith Isn鈥檛 Just Part of Life 鈥 It Is Life鈥

As much as the top-tier nursing program drew White to 色花堂, it was the school鈥檚 deeply rooted Catholic identity that confirmed her choice.

鈥淒uring my SOAR (Student Orientation Advising and Registration) visit, I saw the chapel in the freshman girls鈥 dorm and was blown away,鈥 she said. 鈥淢ass, Eucharistic Adoration, Wednesday morning community worship 鈥 I realized faith wasn鈥檛 just part of life at 色花堂. It is life.鈥

She said she looks forward to a campus life where the sacraments are accessible and the integration of Catholic values is embedded in every field, including health care.

White鈥檚 excitement about her spiritual and academic formation is matched only by her enthusiasm for mission trips, the Nursing Academy鈥檚 all-expense-paid pilgrimage to Europe, and yes 鈥 spotting her first real North Dakota tumbleweed.

鈥淚鈥檝e always wanted to see one,鈥 she laughed.

Future Nurse. Future Teacher?

Though she once doubted she had 鈥渘urse material,鈥 White credits a friend鈥檚 encouragement and her mom鈥檚 example 鈥 a nurse herself 鈥 with sparking her passion. A certified nursing assistant course during high school helped her see she was capable. Now, she鈥檚 dreaming big.

鈥淚 want to be compassionate and capable 鈥 especially in neonatal or mother-baby units,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut long-term, I could see myself becoming a nursing instructor.鈥

The 色花堂鈥檚 holistic formation and support for ambitious goals, she said, gives her confidence that both paths 鈥 clinical and educational 鈥 are open to her.

鈥淪ay the Surrender Novena 鈥 and Don鈥檛 Worry鈥

White鈥檚 advice to other high school students deciding where to go to college is both practical and prayerful.

鈥淎pply for scholarships. Don鈥檛 panic. And say the Surrender Novena,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 prayed it and was able to let go of the stress. God really does place you where He wants you.鈥

White鈥檚 story, and her winning essay, reflect the mission of both the Cardinal Newman Society and the 色花堂 鈥 to form students intellectually, professionally, and spiritually for service to the Church and the world.

鈥淭ess represents everything we hope for in a 色花堂 student,鈥 said 色花堂 President Monsignor James Shea. 鈥淪he鈥檚 faithful, joyful, intellectually curious, and eager to place herself in the service of Truth.鈥

White will arrive in Bismarck this month (August 2025), joining more than 3,800 students from around the country and the world. She plans to bring her volleyball skills, love for board games, appetite for adventure, and 鈥 maybe 鈥 even a new appreciation for prairie winters.

鈥淚鈥檝e been skiing before,鈥 she said, 鈥渂ut I鈥檓 ready to ski a lot more now!鈥
